About this Event
Anton Arensky (1861–1906), teacher of Rachmaninov, Scriabin and Medtner, was himself most influenced by his friend Tchaikovsky, whose piano trio of 1881 was one of the first ever written in Russia and, with its dedication to Nikolai Rubinstein, established the tradition of offering piano trios as eulogies. Arensky composed his own trio (1894) in memory of the cellist Karl Davydov, whose presence is felt not only in the third-movement Elegia, the emotional heart of the piece, but also in the particular prominence of the cello throughout the work.
