This is a public Facebook event, please share to spread the word! We will return for 2024 - Join us for the most popular photo op of Wednesday night! This is the annual free photo op with the classic Marriott Carpet and Trashy, Dragon Con's most famous trash can! Our first event was in 2016. Trashy will be sitting on some old, familiar Marriott carpet that will once again suddenly appear out of thin air. It is kinda like when the ghost of Christmas past magically reappears. The Blue Postcard and other Dragon Con icons have made an appearance in the past. You never know what you will see!
Answers to “I'm new to Dragon Con, what is the story with the carpet?” and “How can I make my own outfit with the world's coolest carpet pattern?” can be found a little bit further below. :)
LOCATION:
Our location will be the same as it has been in past years, in the second lowest level of the Atlanta Marriott Marquis. This is the same level as the information booth and Walk of Fame. Read the "DIRECTIONS AREA" section below for the precise location and directions. For your convenience, I will make reminder posts shortly before the event. They will include directions.

DIRECTIONS:
From the hotel's front entrance/ Lobby level of the Marriott, take the escalators down one level to the Marquis floor and to where the information booth will be set up on Friday. The free photo op will be UNDER THE STAIRS across from that. Even if the information booth is not set up yet on Wednesday, trust me, you'll be able to see us. You will immediately see Trashy sitting on the carpet we have loved and lost. We are on the same level as the Walk of Fame and Bryan Humphrey, official photographer of Dragon Con.

The short version is that the Marriott carpet pattern was popularized at Dragon Con in 2013 by amazing camouflage soldier costumes made by Volpin Props. Photos went viral online and their popularity soared when they were threatened with legal action. Here is one article about the story and there are more further down this page.
The last of this famous carpet design was removed from the Atlanta Marriott Marquis on Wed, Dec 23, 2015. People went to the Marriott dumpster to save it for themselves. Some was sold online. The carpet fad continued to grow.
In 2016 the Cult of Marriott Carpet was formed by longtime Dragon Con attendee “Eternal Zan” and marched in Dragon Con’s annual Saturday morning parade for the first time. Yes, some Atlanta natives were confused as newly-formed group walked by in the parade but the Dragon Con fans immediately got the joke and cheered loudly! The parade group continues to march in the parade every year to this day. The creativity of their members is impressive – even by Dragon Con standards, and that is saying something! More people join the parade group every year.

There was no Facebook event for our first event in 2016. It was a spontaneous thing I did just to see if anyone would get it. It turned out to be so popular that I decided to do it again!

WHAT HAPPENED TO THE BLUE POSTCARD?
Dragon Con used to mail out postcards to confirm your membership purchase. It was blue for regular members and another color for Eternal members. You would bring the postcard to registration to get your badge. In 2019 it was announced that the postcards would be discontinued. For 2020 and beyond there will be no postcards. The new system is called GrowTix and they send out emails instead.
I DON'T GET IT. WHAT IS TRASHY?
In August 2014, Jimmy Burns was sick of people complaining about petty things and then proclaiming that "Dragon Con isn't the same any longer because of X and I'm not going to attend any more" so he made a post on the now-closed original official Facebook group.
"Folks, I just got word from someone "in the know" that this trash can will not be available for use this year at DragonCon. Apparently it is under maintenance. They said they are putting out 5 more trash cans in areas nearby, but I think this is just another sign that DragonCon doesn't care about its attendees anymore. I don't know that I'm going to go this year, it obviously just isn't the con I have come to love over all these years."
This post got over 1,000 hysterical comments and Trashy became a long-running inside joke among Dragon Con attendees.

WILL THIS EVENT BE IN THE DRAGON CON APP?
I don't know. It was in the Dragon Con app for the first time in 2023. I didn't know that was going to happen. I found out when I downloaded the app and saw that it was included. It was a pleasant surprise!
This is an unofficial fan-run meetup and is NOT associated with Dragon Con. Before 2023, this event was not included in the official Dragon Con schedule or app.
You can manually add your own custom events to the schedule in the Dragon Con app when it comes out a few days before con. Until then, please add this to your phone's calendar or whatever organizational system you use.
DO I NEED A DRAGON CON BADGE FOR THIS?
Nope. This is a free, unofficial, fan-run Wednesday evening meetup that takes place BEFORE Dragon Con officially starts on Thursday so no Dragon Con badge or hotel key will be required to enter the hotel.

HOW DO I GET EVENT UPDATES THROUGHOUT THE YEAR?
GET ALL NOTIFICATIONS FOR THIS EVENT.
Facebook Help File: "How do I change my event notification settings?"
1) Click "Events" on the left side of your homepage. You may have to click "See More."
2) Go to the event.
3) From the event, click the three dots "..." in the upper right hand corner .
4) Then click "Notification Settings."
5) From here, you can choose:
* All Notifications: You'll get notifications any time posts are made in the event
* Highlights: You'll get notifications for important posts
* Host Updates Only: You'll get notifications when a host posts in the event
* Off: You won't get notifications
You can also change your event notification settings by clicking "Settings" from your profile and then selecting Notifications > Events.

HOW TO CUSTOMIZE YOUR FACEBOOK EVENT NOTIFICATIONS.
1) RSVP to the event by choosing "Going" or "interested" or "Maybe" or whatever choices Facebook is giving you to say you might attend.
Note: You can't sign up for notifications if you choose "not interested" or "not going."
2) Go to the event.
3) Click "..." in the top right.
4) Select Notification Settings.
5) Choose your preferences.
6) Click Done.
