Make a Splash with MERC and thanks to Whau Local Board!
Registrations open 2 weeks before the event — spots fill fast, so don’t miss out!
Ready to dip your paddle into something new? Join the awesome crew from the Sir Peter Blake Marine Education and Recreation Centre (MERC) for an unforgettable kayaking adventure! Whether you’re a total beginner or just keen to get back out on the water, this hands-on experience will have you learning the basics—how to paddle, steer, and handle your kayak—before putting those new skills into action as you explore the local coastline.
Session Times (Pre-Registration Required)
Each participant must register for their preferred 1-hour session:
10:00am – 11:00am
11:00am – 12:00pm
12:30pm – 1:30pm
1:30pm – 2:30pm
Registrations are essential as numbers are limited for every session—secure your preferred time early!
Safety & Gear:
MERC will supply all activity equipment and safety gear, including compulsory life jackets. A limited number of optional wetsuits will also be available for those who need them.
Important:
On the day of the event, all participants (or their guardians) must sign risk disclosures before taking part.
Children as young as 4 years old are welcome to join the kayaking sessions. A parent or guardian must participate with them and remain with them at all times on the water.
We do have a limited number of small life vests available. However, some younger children may be too small for the extra-small sizes we provide. Fit can only be confirmed in person on the day.
If you already have a small, well-fitting life vest for your child, you’re welcome to bring it along. Our team will assess it on-site and let you know if it’s suitable for use during the activity.
Safety is our top priority, and our team will be happy to help with any questions on the day.
What to Bring:
- Togs/swimwear (please arrive wearing these)
- Sunscreen
- Water bottle
- Hat and sun protection
- Towel and a change of clothes for after your session
- Water shoes (optional)
Get ready for fun, fresh air, and a fantastic day on the water—we can’t wait to see you out there!
