Public Lecture: Discover the remarkable music and legacy of Portsmouth-born composer Freda Swain in this lecture-recital.
About this Event

At this lecture-recital, Professor George Burrows, Swiss pianist Timon Altwegg, and author Leah Broad share their insights into Swain’s life, work and influence, illustrated with live performances that highlight her prolific output and her advocacy for British music and women composers.

This event explores the life and music of the Portsmouth-born composer Freda Swain. Although a room is named after her in Portsmouth’s Guildhall, she remains an obscure figure and yet is one of the most important musicians that Portsmouth ever produced. The University of Portsmouth’s Professor of Music and Theatre, George Burrows, is joined by the Swiss pianist, Timon Altwegg, and the award-winning author and broadcaster Leah Broad to share their different experiences of discovering Swain and her music. Illustrated by examples performed live, Swain’s life and work will be outlined along with her importance as a musician who wrote nearly 600 works and campaigned for better representation of new British music and especially women composers and performers.

Part of the Sing 100 Festival.
