About this Event

Frankie J Jam Skate Masterclass – hosted by Skates4Mates

Get ready to roll! Join us for a fun, friendly open class with internationally renowned, award-winning roller skater, house dancer, and DJ Frankie J (aka thereddreadhousehead). In this rare in-person session, Frankie offers a welcoming, inclusive space to sharpen your roller skating skills, learn new grooves and tricks, and connect with fellow Portsmouth skaters.

This event is hosted by Skates4Mates, a community project using roller skating to build connection, wellbeing, and social justice with people seeking sanctuary in the UK. It is the first in our Ride Joy: Guest Artist Masterclass series, which invites skaters with diverse experience to share their practice, explore different approaches to the joy of roller skating, and create opportunities for the skate community to connect with one another.

Format

The practical session will be 90 minutes with 30 minutes at the end to ask questions, chat to Frankie and get to know other skaters.

So get your skates on and let’s get rolling!

Who this is for

This masterclass is for roller skaters with some basic skating experience who are keen to explore jam skating, rhythm, and flow in a supportive, inclusive environment. You don’t need to be advanced or specialise in any particular style, just be comfortable moving on your skates and open to learning, experimenting, and having fun.

This session is especially suited to skaters who enjoy learning through groove, music, and shared energy, and who value community, connection, and skating together over performance or perfection.

Please note: This is an over 18 event. You must bring your own skates and safety gear.

Numbers are strictly limited. Tickets are offered at a subsidised rate. Part funded by Arts Council England, with support from Crying Out Loud, 432 Nomads, City of Sanctuary Portsmouth, and Portsmouth Guildhall.
