Ōtautahi Christchurch-based painter Francis van Hout crafts geometric abstractions with adept sensibilities to paint materiality, colour and surface texture. These paintings are imbued with the characteristics that define van Hout's practice – attention to tone, grain, quality of structural lines and indeed his signature wit.
'Grey, Red (Getting Older)' runs 26 May – 22 June 2026 at City Art Depot.
Also opening in our new Up Stairs gallery space: 'Sacred to the memory of Itself' by Henk Tomkins.
Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland-based painter Henk Tomkins' work fuses gestural abstraction with screen printing to explore the complexity of human emotion. His paintings exist in a suspended space between sensation and image, inviting viewers into a dialogue with vulnerability, grief and connection.
'Sacred to the memory of Itself' runs 26 May – 22 June 2026 at City Art Depot.
