The frame drum is one of the oldest known instruments, found across cultures and traditions around the world. In this two day, hands on workshop, you will build your own 18” frame drum using yellow cedar, goat skin, and rawhide. The process is physical and focused, working with simple tools and natural materials in a craft based environment.
Day one is spent shaping and finishing the wooden frame and preparing the drum head. Day two, once the skin has set, you will complete the drum by lacing the handle and making your beater.
Guidance is offered throughout as you move through each stage of the build, with space to make it your own through the choices and effort you bring to the process. As the drum comes together, so does a personal connection to the instrument. Many people find the experience brings up a sense of memory, reflection, or intention in a way that feels natural.
You will also be introduced to the roots and uses of the frame drum, including how rhythm and voice can work together, and how to care for your instrument over time.
You will leave with a drum you built yourself, and a connection to it that is entirely your own.
Saturday: 1:00pm - 4:00pm
Sunday: 10:00am - 1:00pm
