You know him as a priest and a premiere Catholic apologist; now learn about his other creative side as a poet and playwright and hymn writerFr. Dwight Longenecker: Catholic Playwright?
You probably know something about Fr. Dwight Longenecker. An Anglican convert, Fr. Dwight Longenecker is a priest, a pastor, a husband, a father, an author of (at least) 20 books , and one of the most beloved Catholic apologists today.
But did you know he is also a playwright? The Benedict XVI Institute's Retreat for Artists and Art Lovers on June 21-23 at St. Patrick Seminary featured a staged reading of his freshly written new play "Aconite and Church Lace: A (Not Very) Divine Comedy."
Come on July 11 to the chapel of Holy Family Convent (4350 Geary Blvd SF), across the street from Star of the Sea parish in San Francisco.
Reflection questions for this evening:
-How do we sidestep a secular audience’s suspicion of religion?
-What moral questions engage/intrigue a secular audience and therefore provide a platform for faith to be expressed?
-How does Tolkien’s theory of “eucatastrophe” play out on stage?
-What advantages has live staged drama have over film?
This will be an IN PERSON EVENT ONLY and a wonderful opportunity for fellowship with your fellow lovers of the faith and lovers of the art of evangelizing through sacred beauty. Light refreshments will follow. Donations are very much appreciated to defray these costs ($20 if you can afford it, but please come regardless.)
As pastor of Our Lady of the Rosary Church in Greenville, South Carolina, Father Dwight Longenecker has built a beautiful parish, a beautiful church, and a beautiful (English-language) liturgy, and a thriving classically liberal Catholic school. Our Lady of the Rosary has packed pews. He knows a thing or two about the power of beauty to evangelize.
He writes about being a playwright here. He blogs at www.dwightlongenecker.com .
