Foyle Valley Railway Museum
Visit & Special Guided Tour
Thursday 2nd July | 2:00pm – 3:30pm
Join us for a fascinating afternoon at the Foyle Valley Railway Museum, situated in the historic city on the banks of the River Foyle, with a special guided tour by Martin Parke, Team Leader from the Museums Department of Derry City & Strabane Council.
Step back in time and discover the rich railway heritage of the North West. At the heart of the museum exhibition is a recreated railway station platform featuring the majestic County Donegal Railway steam locomotive “Columbkille.” Within the displays, visitors can learn about the railway companies that once operated from the city and explore the rise and fall of local railways through fascinating exhibitions of memorabilia and preserved railway vehicles.
Today the city is served by one railway system connecting to Belfast, Dublin and beyond. However, there was a time when four different railway systems operated from here, stretching throughout Northern Ireland and into County Donegal. The museum tells the story of this remarkable transport history and the important role the railways once played in the development of the region.
Martin Parke will provide insights and background stories that bring the exhibits and railway heritage to life before visitors have the opportunity to explore the museum at their own pace.
The museum is also located beside a beautiful riverside park and picnic area alongside the River Foyle, making it an ideal location for a leisurely afternoon visit.
