HISTORY
Fort Widley is one of a group of forts located on Portsdown hill in Portsmouth
It was built by Captain Crossman between 1861 and 1871 and provided with ordnance after completion.
During the 1920’s the fort was handed over to naval ownership. In the Second World War, Fort Widley was used as an action post fire and also housed the RE bomb disposal unit.
In 1942 the fort was used to house prisoners of war and after 1943 it was used as an alternative control centre. During the 1950s, the fort was used as a headquarters for local defence coordination and this went on until the end of the Cold War period in 1992.
After the fort had closed, Portsmouth city council acquired the building and since then it has been used as an activity centre.
