About this Event
In this episode, presenter Ciarán Murray is joined by Professor Frank Barry to explore the vanished industrial landscape of inner-city Dublin. Once home to bustling bakeries, breweries, sweet factories, foundries, textile mills and shipyards, the city’s streets echoed with the sounds of production and the lives of thousands of workers.
Through expert insight, archival soundscapes and traditional songs performed by members of An Góilín, the audience will hear about the forgotten factories that shaped Dublin’s communities, economy and identity in the early 20th century. From Jacob’s and Guinness to Ringsend’s glassworks and the metalworks of Hammond Lane, this programme brings to life the hidden histories behind the buildings and businesses that once powered the capital.
Frank Barry is Emeritus Professor of International Business and Economic Development at TCD and a member of the Royal Irish Academy. His monograph on Industry and Policy in Independent Ireland, 1922-1972 was published by Oxford University Press in 2023.
