Commander John Adams (Leslie Nielsen) and his crew are tasked with a very important assignment: travel via faster-than-light rocket to the planet Altair IV and find out why the last mission there, sent 20 years before, has never reported back. When they arrive, the only survivor of that original mission (Walter Pidgeon as Dr. Edward Morbius) warns them not to land, which warning they ignore. Thus begins one of the most incredible science-fiction stories portrayed on film to that point: a retelling of Shakespeare’s The Tempest with Dr. Morbius as Prospero, Altaira (Anne Francis) as his Miranda, and Robby the Robot as his hulking, clumsy Caliban.
A technical marvel of filmmaking, Forbidden Planet set the genre’s aesthetic for a generation, carving new paths in set design, visual effects, and even score. It has the first entirely electronic music score of any film, with composers Bebe and Louis Barron creating their own electronic circuits to generate sound through ring modulators, essentially fixed and hard-wired synthesizer elements, which had to be altered with reverb and filters after recording. And aside from all the incredible scientific novelty involved in its creation, as a movie, it still hits.
