About this Event
The meaning in life: How we construct our understanding of our experiences.
Life is busy and it is full of stuff. One of the ways that humans attempt to try to make sense of their increasingly complex world is to form mental representations of the things they know by drawing together aligned ideas into broader concepts – known as schema. Schema are organised bodies of knowledge that set our expectations about how our world is ordered; they help us make sense of new experiences and they give balance to our thinking. Professor Erik Blair has been teaching since 1998; initially starting in the compulsory education sector and then moving into further and higher education. As an educationalist, Professor Blair works with clinicians to draw together their clinical expertise with his insights in order to help them make sense of the role and function of medical education. In this inaugural lecture, Professor Blair will try to explain how we construct our understanding of our experiences, drawing on examples from his own life and from the wider world.
