Flare is a european quartet playing cutting-edge contemporary jazz and bringing together musicians from Latvia, the UK and Germany.
Constantin Krahmer, piano player and composer from Rostock, Germany, is a dedicated organizer for international projects inviting musicians from all countries to his concert line Bron (swedish: the bridge) founded in 2021. As a musical performer he released a trio album with Thomas Morgan (USA) and Leif Berger which was critically acclaimed and is continuously working on and releasing new music at his label Yew Records. In January 2023, he invited Karlis Auzins to play with him in Rostock and went to Riga for a concert in return the following summer.
Karlis Auzins is one of the most prolific contemporary jazz musicians in Latvia, with an incredible range of musical output, reaching from saxophone solo recordings with a complete own approach and sound over his own quartet to a duo with strong influences of contemporary classical music. In march 2025 he was awarded the Latvian Grand Music Award 2025 in the category ""Outstanding Performance in Jazz"" and released his double-trio album Equilibrium.
The concert in Latvia was the first time they played a concert with tunes from each other and the blend of their music was quite a good match. Besides the concert they hang out, listen to a lot of music together and the idea of a collaboration was born. With the amazing rhythm section of Ruth Goller (electric bass) and Leif Berger (drums) in mind, they started to write some music taylor- made for this exceptional ensemble of outstanding musicians and improvisers.
The tunes are leaving a lot of space for improvisation but also often have song-like melodic qualities flavored with a bunch of musical influences like Contemporary Classical Music, Improvised Music, Traditional Folk Music, etc., aiming to let the musicians unfold their complete potential as improvisers and to set the whole band in a state of cheerful resonance.
