INSTITUTION OF FIRE ENGINEERS, SINGAPORE (IFES) COURSE 2026
Demonstrating Performance in Fire Engineering (Hybrid)
Seminar Information
Fire safety engineering is undergoing a professional transition, driving clearer expectations around competence, responsibility, and professional judgment. This seminar examines fire scenarios, their impacts, and the principles behind mitigation measures, while exploring the role and boundaries of the fire engineer.
Participants will discuss how performance is demonstrated when guidance is insufficient or unclear. The session will focus on defensible assumptions, communicating uncertainty, when simplified calculations are needed to quantify advice, and the importance of transparent, traceable engineering foundations such as those promoted through the OpenFire Software initiative.
Target Audience
Fire Safety Engineers, Professional Engineers, Registered Architects, Fire Investigators, Fire Safety Managers, Safety Officers, Suppliers of Fire Products, Building Owners, Developers, Building Contractors, Facility Management and Maintenance Personnel, Authority Having Jurisdiction, etc.

Speaker’s Profile
Dr. Simón Santamaria is a Technical Development Director at Stantec, where he leads the technical training, competence development, and professional upskilling of fire safety engineering staff across the organization.
Dr. Santamaria focuses on strengthening how fire safety strategies are developed, justified, and communicated within complex building projects. He has also created and regularly delivers foundational fire safety courses for non-fire engineers, helping to build broader competence across the built environment profession.
Dr. Santamaria is President of the UK Chapter of the Society of Fire Protection Engineers (SFPE) and sits on British Standards Institution committees FSH/14 and FSH/24, which oversee guidance-based and performance-based approaches to fire engineering. He is a Co-Founder of OpenFire Software, an open initiative aimed at providing transparent, traceable calculation foundations for the fire engineering profession. He is actively engaged in teaching and supporting the development of the next generation of fire engineers.
