Why This Topic Matters
We build our careers while navigating expectations of what work “should” look like. In the era of “girl boss” and “lean in”, we've been taught to chase prestige, passion, and productivity. But what if we focused on finding work that genuinely fits who they are? What if we stopped discussing work-life balance and accept that work is actually part of life, not seperate to it?. Let's rethink what a fulfilling career actually looks like.
About the Speaker
Dr Charlotte Smith is a geospatial data scientist and Director of C Smith Consulting. Trained as an environmental scientist, she has moved through tech start-ups, academia, big-business energy companies, and is now working with an NGO to build their technology systems. Her career has spanned a wide range of projects, team cultures, and leadership styles—experiences that have shaped her understanding of how deeply our work influences our whole lives.
What the Session Covers
This session follows the winding journey Charlotte has taken to reach a place where her work supports her life—not competes with it. Rather than focusing on job titles or sectors, the talk explores the importance of finding people whose ways of working align with your own and companies whose missions fulfill you. Through examples from her own career, Charlotte highlights how each chapter taught her something about the environments that energise her, the ones that drain her, and the freedom that comes from realising you can step away from what no longer fits. It’s an honest look at career growth as a continuous process of adjustment, self-knowledge, and making the choices that are right for you.
Key Takeaways
- Work is part of life, not its counterpart.
- Your career path is allowed to change direction – even dramatically!
- Creating your own safety net gives you the freedom to choose.
