Spend a full day in the darkroom and experience the complete analog black & white workflow, from developing your own film to learn to enlarge your negatives into positive B&W photographs.
This workshop is perfect for beginners as well as photographers with some prior darkroom experience who want to deepen their understanding of printing techniques.

11:00 – Welcome & Introduction
We begin the day with coffee and a relaxed introduction:
- Getting to know each other
- Basic theory of black & white film development
- Overview of chemicals, equipment, and safety
- Explanation of the full day’s process
11:45 – Film Development (Hands-on)
- Develop one or two black & white films together
- Step-by-step guidance through the entire process
- Working with tanks, chemistry, timing, and temperature
- Practical tips and common troubleshooting
13:00 – Drying Time & Lunch Break
- Hang the freshly developed negatives in the drying cabinet
- Take a moment to admire the beautiful results
- Lunch break outside the lab (not included in ticket price)
14:30 – Cutting & Archiving
After returning from lunch:
- The films are dry and ready to handle
- Cutting the negatives
- Sleeving them in archival sheets
- Best practices for organizing and storing your archive
15:15 – Making a Contact Sheet
- Print a contact sheet from your freshly developed roll
- Learn how to expose contact sheets properly
- How to read and evaluate your negatives
- Select images for enlargement
16:00 – Darkroom Printing
- Introduction to enlarger setup
- Exposure and development of your first print
- Start with single contrast (classic) printing technique
If time and concentration allow, we will also explore:
Split Grade Printing (Advanced Technique)
- How to control contrast using multiple exposures
- Practical demonstration and guided application
Wrap-up (around 19:00)
We close the workshop with:
- Reviewing your print
- Final Q&A
- Tips for continuing your darkroom practice
After the workshop, you’ll have the opportunity to apply for membership at Stattlab and gain access to the darkroom to continue printing independently.
