About this Event
Saturday, July, 10 am - 11 pm, Tree Identification Tour of Westinghouse Park
Tour Guide: Jill Traub, HPGC
(Rain Date: Sunday, July 21, 10 am)
Join us at Westinghouse Park in North Point Breeze, which was designated a National Arboretum in October 2021. This City Park, an under-appreciated gem, was once the grounds of George Westinghouse's historic home, Solitude. This easy walk promises an exploration of both botany and bygone days.
Here, you will discover a rich tapestry of trees, many of which have graced this space since Westinghouse’s time in Pittsburgh near the turn of the 20th century. This stroll will offer members the opportunity to learn the unique features of a selection of trees, including those common to the region and others more exotic. These identification pointers will guide you in recognizing trees you come across elsewhere.
We will meet at the Westinghouse Park sign at the corner of Thomas Blvd and North Murtland St. Parking is free and easy to find along the streets that border the park. Nearby landmarks include Construction Junction, The Center for Creative Reuse, and Grow Pittsburgh’s Shiloh Farm.
There is ample free street parking. Rain Date: Sunday, July 21, 10 am. The event will be cancelled in the event of poor weather on both dates. There is shade in the park from all the lovely trees, but so prepare for an hour or so outside - please bring hats, water, and anything else you may need to remain comfortable outdoors.
The program is free to all HPGC members. Non-member can attend through an Eventbrite ticket (click here). Anyone can join the club - please email [email protected] for online and mail-in options.
This program is part of the "Highland Park Garden Club Presents..." , a series of monthly programs designed to entertain and educate about gardening-related topics.
