The RGS-HK is pleased to welcome Arthur Yeung again to lead a guided walk exploring Lei Yue Mun and Cha Kwo Ling, two historic villages on Hong Kong’s eastern coastline.Lei Yue Mun is a 200-year-old Hakka mining and farming settlement, turned renowned seafood destination. With roots tracing back to the Qing Dynasty, the village features historic temples and then from the 1960s it became a thriving stilt-house fishing community.
Cha Kwo Ling, a 400-year-old urban Hakka village, is currently in the final stages of demolition and redevelopment. The village will be fully vacated and transformed into a public housing development, marking the end of an era for this historic community.
Both villages illustrate the ongoing challenges of balancing heritage preservation with urban development, including new housing projects, reclamation pressures, and infrastructure expansion.
This guided walk takes participants from Lei Yue Mun Village to Cha Kwo Ling, combining themes of fishing village life, historical landscape and urban history. The route highlights the interplay between traditional village life and modern urban pressures, while providing opportunities to explore Hong Kong’s unique coastal and hillside environments. The terrain is mostly easy to moderate, but includes some uphill sections and narrow streets.
Arthur Yeung is the founder of V’air, a geographer and educator specialising in people-place relationships and sustainable urban planning. Arthur holds a master’s degree in urban planning and is currently a PhD candidate at the Chinese University of Hong Kong.
