Festival Walk No.6
A walk/talk to introduce participants to the East Yorkshire Geopark by following the Centenary Way, Wolds Way, and Wolds Rangers Way. Along the route there will be a reflection on the origins of the Wolds landscape as proposed by the Wolds Reassessment Project (WRAP).
At Wharram Percy DMV there will be an introduction to the building stones used in the construction of the houses and church. This is part of the ongoing building stones assessment being undertaken for English Heritage by Ryedale Vernacular Building Materials Research Group and which fulfils the criteria for community engagement.

Background info - Geologically the area exposes rocks from the Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous periods as well as deposits from the last Ice Age. Along the western edge of the Wolds the rocks exposed form the unique structure known as the Market Weighton Axis which controlled sedimentation throughout the Triassic and Jurassic. Lying over these rocks is the most northerly Chalk in Britain which forms a continuous outcrop from South West England to Flamborough Head where it is faulted and folded within a structure known as the Flamborough – Howardian fault zone. The rocks of the area have provided a wide range of building stones widely used in local Churches, older farm and village buildings, including Chalk not normally known for its building stone qualities.
