Femme Empowerment Cumbia Dance Class Series

Tuesdays, December 3, 10, and 17, 2024 | 6:30 PM - 7:45 PM

Join us for a transformative journey of self-discovery and empowerment through the vibrant rhythms of folkloric cumbia! This 3-class series is open to everyone and focuses on feminine empowerment. We aim to create a space for all to explore and embrace their feminine essence, regardless of gender identity or background. While we’ll learn elements of cumbia traditionally centered on women, we challenge and expand that narrative, welcoming all—especially trans and non-binary folks.

Inspired by Indigenous and Afro-Colombian roots, we’ll move to the sounds of Gaitas, flautas de millo, maracas, and drums. Each class blends dance instruction, creative expression through makeup and skirts, and personal empowerment.

Activities will include:

👄Day 1: Brief historical background and basic folkloric cumbia steps, exploring your femininite essence and creative expression with lips and lip color.

🌺Day 2: Cultivating Inner Strength and empowerment with the use of headpieces, flowers, and color.

🕯Day 3: Building Confidence and Connecting with Inner Light through candlelight meditation and movement. We'll then bring together all explored elements in a unified dance experience, celebrating our journey of self-discovery and empowerment 🎉

All materials needed for the series will be provided, including headpieces, polleras (cumbia skirts), new, unused makeup, and props. Participants are welcome to bring their own makeup and props for added creativity. The use of props is encouraged but not mandatory in this journey. No partner is required, and the space is supportive and inclusive for all.
