About this Event
This workshop introduces participants to a sculpture-based project that uses cardboard construction as an entry point into foundational sculptural and joinery concepts. The goal is for participants to leave with practical, transferable techniques they can immediately adapt to their own classrooms—regardless of budget or available resources.
Participants will:
Learn foundational cardboard construction and slot-based joinery techniques
Explore how these methods translate to wood and other rigid materials
Engage in a hands-on creative challenge that encourages problem-solving and design thinking
Complete a small-scale sculptural maquette by the end of the session
Hilary Scullane is an interdisciplinary artist and sculpture educator currently teaching middle and upper school sculpture in The Woodlands. Her curriculum emphasizes hands-on, process-driven learning through accessible materials such as cardboard, wood, and found objects. She regularly integrates engineering concepts, joinery techniques, and design thinking into her courses.
Hilary actively participates in Houston’s arts community through exhibitions, workshops, and collaborative projects. Her teaching practice bridges contemporary sculpture, STEAM education, and material exploration, with a strong focus on adaptability across varied classroom environments.
Snacks and all materials will be provided, however you are welcome to bring your own supplies.
Please note that this workshop is specifically designed for and offered to educators within the greater Houston area. You can find a list of classes and workshops open to the public at
