CLASSIC: FRENCH NEW WAVE
With the recent release of Richard Linklater’s Nouvelle Vague about the making of this classic, this is a chance to see the original starring Jean Seaberg and Jean-Paul Belmondo, it is the epitome of French cool. When Jean Luc Godard released A Bout De Souffle in 1960 it was an explosion in the cinema world. Nobody had seen anything like it, with quick jump cuts, handheld camera work and cutting dialogue. It was about as radical as it could get at the time, like punk on film, remember this is before the Beatles and everything else that happened in the swinging 60’s. Along with other French directors including Truffaut and Chabrol, these young film-makers created the French Nouvelle Vague, come and see it’s defining moment.
