About the Speaker:

Marlon Blackwell

Marlon Blackwell is founder and principal at Marlon Blackwell Architects, a design firm established in 1992 in Arkansas, USA. His design practice has been the recipient of numerous major awards and honors, including the 2020 American Institute of Architects Gold Medal, the 2020 Southeastern Conference Professor of the Year, and the 2016 National Design Award for Architecture Design from Cooper-Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum. In 2012, he received the Architecture Prize from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. In 2014, he was named a United States Artists Ford Fellow (in Architecture and Design). In 2023 Blackwell was elected as a member to the American Academy of Arts & Sciences.

Blackwell has also taught at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville since 1992, where he is the E. Fay Jones Chair in Architecture and a Distinguished Professor in the Fay Jones School of Architecture and Design. He has also taught at the University of Arkansas since 1992, and he has also held visiting professorships at the following universities: Massachusetts Institute of Technology (2001 and 2002), Washington University in St. Louis (2003), University of Florida (2009), Auburn University (2008), University of Michigan (2009), University of Virginia (2011), Cornell University (2012), University of Texas at Austin (2016), and currently at Harvard University.

“Blackwell has a gift for seeing potential in the commonplace . . . for making use of simple geometries and modest materials to create beautiful functional architecture”

2014 Architectural Record’s Michael Cockram

Te Pare School of Architecture and Planning is hosting Marlon as part of the International Architect-in-Residence (IAiR) visiting professorship. The goal of the IAiR is to host an internationally significant architect in the second semester of each year. Marlon will teach an intensive design studio course at the University of Auckland (assisted by architecture school staff), as well as present public lectures in Auckland, Wellington, and Christchurch, and student seminars at schools of architecture in the main centres.

The benefit of a visiting professorship over the usual rapid-fire lecture tour is that the longer-term engagement allows students and the wider architecture community to take on both a broader understanding of the architect’s work and a deeper understanding of the underlying ideas.
