About this Event

While haute couture (French for "high sewing") emerged as a Parisian innovation in the mid-19th century, it has since evolved into a symbol of luxury, craftsmanship, and artistic expression throughout the world of fashion. Who are some of fashion’s brightest stars who left an indelible mark on fashion history? From pioneering concepts like the little black dress and power shoulders to avant-garde fashion and ready-to-wear, it's time to delve into a transformative era of couture houses and superstar designers whose legacies live on through contemporary fashion.

Join New York Adventure Club for a three-part series about high fashion’s most famous designers. In Part One: The First Couturiers, we’ll trace six influential couturiers from the late-nineteenth and early-twentieth centuries who revolutionized the dressmaking industry through their creativity and innovative business practices.

Led by fashion historian Summer Anne Lee, this digital showcase will include:

  • The history and regulations of the haute couture industry
  • The legacy of the "First Couturier," Charles Frederick Worth, who laid the foundations of haute couture in the mid-19th century — and Worth’s competitor, Jeanne Paquin, the “Queen of Haute Couture”
  • Avant-garde designs of Paul Poiret and Mariano Fortuny, both credited with liberating women from corsets
  • Pioneering accomplishments of Lady Duff Gordon whose elegant creations graced the world stage
  • Madeleine Vionnet’s revolutionary approach to garment construction, which transformed the way fabric was draped on the body

Afterward, we'll have a Q&A with Summer — any and all questions are welcomed and encouraged!
