ABOUT THIS COLLECTION
Drawing inspiration from one of my favourite movies entitled ‘The Scent of Green Papaya’, this collection revolves around a journey of Mui as a young domestic worker in 1950s Saigon. The film’s gentle narrative explores different angles to comprehend one’s sensory experiences and emotional complexity, which in turn influenced my design. The use of mint green/pink tone reflective of southeast Asian, references South-East Asian colonial style, which simultaneously reflective of the Asian heritage of mine. The elastic nature of Jersey fabric in this collection allows the manipulation of free forms, whilst the use of monochromatic colour palette uniform the entire look. In addition, the acrylic boards were printed with my own photography pieces, which forms a stark contrast between the tranquil translucency of clear acrylic and the opaque dense forms of garments.
ABOUT OUR DESIGNER
Born and raised in China, I’ve been living in Shanghai until the age of 17, when I came to Buckinghamshire to pursue my A-Level studies. After graduation, I applied for the Central Saint Martins foundation and continued the BA Fashion Design Knitwear in the following year. Watching movies and Photography are my biggest field of interest, as documenting ordinary mundane scenes will often inspire me in an unpredictable way. As I major in knitwear, I learnt various techniques and incorporated yarns with various materials to complete my works. For instance, I experimented with knitting purple cabbage and bark into my knitting sample, as well as the process of dyeing and matching different yarns. In my future studies, I wish to continue my learning of fashion design and engage in the industry.
