About this Event

Sylvie Walters, founder of the tour agency L’Esprit San Francisco ; Daphné Touchais, tour guide; and François Drémeaux, naval historian, are pleased to invite you to the third edition of the “San Francisco Heritage Festival,” which will take place at Fort Mason on Friday, September 20, between 1:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m.

Inspired by the European Heritage Days, this event will offer participants the unique opportunity to explore the archives and collections of rare objects of the San Francisco
Maritime Center, which shed light on this other aspect of California’s history: its maritime foundation. Usually closed even to researchers, this secret space is nestled inside one of the historic buildings of Fort Mason, formerly the headquarters of the American Navy and today part of the San Francisco Maritime Historic Park.

After a short general introduction in French on Fort Mason and the maritime history of San Francisco, the national park rangers will take over in English and present the Archival Collection, featuring rare documents from the 18 th to the mid-20 th century, such as old photos, plans and logbooks. They will then show us some of the treasures of the Museum Collection, which include fragments of boats, navigation instruments, models and other objects discovered in the boats buried beneath downtown San Francisco. After this, time is planned for discussion and Q&A with the rangers in the library of the research center.

Visits are free upon registration and limited to 20 participants per group. Two tours are planned, one from 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. and one from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Please note that the tour is not suitable for children under 12.
