Join us to uncover our local humanist heritage, understand its connection to our wider cultural and political story, and discuss the lessons it holds for us today. Humanism lacks a neat linear history. It has no founding figure or text. However, humanism is a worldview that has endured. Sources of wisdom or inspiration for humanists today can be found in the words and deeds of a wide variety of people across time and place.
On the eve of International Women’s Day (and to celebrate Women's History Month) Madeleine will share her particular expertise on ‘Heroines of Freethought’ and the often overlooked female activists and organisers who have helped shape the UK’s humanist movement. We’ll also explore our local humanist heritage including notable local figures such as Kit Mouat (first female editor of the Freethinker, author and adoption rights and LGBTQ activist), and Thomas Paine (writer, freethinker, and revolutionary).

**Our speaker**
Madeleine Goodall is the Humanist Heritage Coordinator for Humanists UK, and their Wikimedian in Residence. Her work focuses on the history and influence of the non-religious in the UK - particularly under researched stories - and their impact on art, literature, and social, political, and ethical culture. Prior to undertaking the Humanist Heritage project, Madeleine worked in schools, for the Wordsworth Trust in Cumbria, and on a National Lottery Heritage funded project in Norfolk.
