About this Event
© Esther Levine. On Foot. 2026.
Deutsches Haus at NYU presents Esther Levine’s exhibition On Foot, a photographic journey along an invisible line, following memories, family history and stories Esther Levine grew up with. The story unfolds through landscapes, roadsides and encounters alongside the path where nothing seems to happen, yet everything does. Each photograph marks a pause in the movement (act of walking). The walk follows a line that is both geographical and internal tracing histories buried beneath the surface of the landscape. The repetition of views mirrors the rhythm of walking, slow attentive and accumulative. What emerges is not a document of a route, but a visual record of memory made tangible through the act of walking, noticing, seeing and recording.
The exhibition opening will include a conversation between Esther Levine and Sarah Girner. The exhibition will remain on view through May 29.
Please RSVP for in-person attendance.
About the photographer:
Esther Levine was born in Frankfurt am Main to a German mother and an American father. After high school, she moved to New York City, where she attended City College of New York and continued her photographic education in the Documentary Program at the International Center of Photography. After completing her studies, she began documenting cities including Berlin, New York City, Warsaw, Beirut, and Guangzhou. These projects resulted in a series of artist books and zines. Walking has always been central to her practice. What began as an intuitive method of moving through cities evolved into a conceptual framework: tracing memory and family history through long-distance walks, photographing along the way. Her through-walks function as both physical journeys and acts of research, connecting geography, personal narrative, and historical layers of place. Her work is held in the collections of Princeton University Library, the Metropolitan Museum of Art Library, the New York Public Library, as well as in private collections.
