About this Event

Writing to Bloom is an Exhibition Makers Workshop and part of The Makers’ Collective — a community-led creative initiative bringing together workshops and exhibitions around shared themes of place, care, creativity, and connection.

This workshop responds to Bloom. When the Water Speaks, inviting participants to reflect on and express personal and collective responses to the algal bloom that devastated our ocean and coastline in 2025.

Words are powerful. They help us describe, express, and process what we are witnessing and experiencing.

Through guided prompts and mindfulness-based practices, this gentle workshop invites you to slow down and connect — with nature, with the ocean, and with yourself. You’ll be supported to write in whatever form feels right: a poem, story, letter, reflection, or something entirely your own.

Writing may explore:

  • The ocean, nature, and the earth
  • Grief, care, and reflection
  • Creativity, activism, or science
  • Personal processing and release

No writing experience is required. Adapted prompts are offered to support participants who may feel less confident with words. Weather permitting, parts of the session may take place outdoors.

If you wish, your writing may be included in the April exhibition, contributing to a shared community response to the theme. Participation in the exhibition is completely optional.

The City of Charles Sturt would like to acknowledge the land we occupy today is the traditional lands of the Kaurna people and that we respect their spiritual relationship with their country. We also acknowledge the Kaurna people as the custodians of the greater Adelaide region and that their cultural and heritage beliefs are still as important to the living Kaurna people today.
