This event celebrates the launch of our new exhibition Rag: A History of Blood.

The event will begin in our foyer with a drinks reception. You will then have the opportunity to hear two speakers, Prof Helen King and Prof Marc Turner. Helen will explore the history of menstruation, while Marc will discuss blood transfusion in the 21st century.

The reception will then continue with the opportunity to visit our new exhibition.

About the exhibition

Blood has been studied and analysed for thousands of years. Examined for its ability to give life, to spread disease and to sow division.

Bringing together artefacts spanning scientific illustrations, textile art, interviews, early modern rare books and medicines, Rag: A History of Blood highlights the social, medical and cultural impact of blood.

This exhibition is split into three themes. First, it examines blood-based discoveries which have saved countless lives.

It then moves on to the stigma associated with blood myths – from menopause and menstruation to HIV/AIDS and scientific racism.

Finally, the exhibition explores the blood trade, including the history of blood transfusion and bloodletting.

Doors open at 6pm. Reception begins 6pm, talks from 6:30pm to 7:30pm and further reception from 7:30pm to 8pm.
