University Collections at McCalla will celebrate the opening of its new exhibition, Capturing the Campus: T.C. Steele, Indiana University’s First Artist in Residence, on Friday, April 17, 4:00 pm-6:00 pm EDT. The event will begin with remarks by Katie Chattin, Director of the IU Public Art and Cultural Heritage Collection, and Paula Katz, Senior Curator of Art for the Indiana State Museum and Historic Sites. After the talks, attendees will explore the exhibit. Light refreshments will be provided.
Capturing the Campus pays tribute to renowned Hoosier artist T.C. Steele. The exhibit honors the century that has passed since his death by showcasing paintings form the artist’s residency at IU and other relevant works. The exhibit will bring together Steele’s landscapes from the IU Public Art and Cultural Heritage Collection and the Indiana State Museum and Historic Sites’ collection, allowing the holdings of these two collections to be viewed in one space.
Paintings found in the exhibit feature the Old Cresent, Campus River, and what once was the eastern edge of the campus. The landscapes will show the familiar, such as Franklin Hall, and the unfamiliar, such as the old power plant that stood where the Biddle Hotel is currently located. Additional items on display include portraits of Steele and IU President William Lowe Bryan, photographs of Steele, and Steele’s correspondence and associated university documents held by Indiana University Archives. Accompanying the art and objects will be Arthur Lieu’s House of the Singing Winds, a three-channel video installation that depicts Steele’s Brown County homestead throughout the four seasons, moving between the exterior and interior of the home, which are preserved just as the artist lived 100 years ago.
