BHS presents a special presentation focusing on the nine pillars of hip hop.
About this Event

Hip hop is more than music—it is a cultural movement built on creativity, community, and expression. This presentation explores the nine pillars of hip hop: DJing, MCing, Breaking, Graffiti, Beatboxing, Street Fashion, Street Language, Street Entrepreneurship, and Knowledge. Together, these elements represent the artistic, social, and intellectual foundations of the culture.

While the first four pillars are widely recognised, the others highlight how hip hop influences identity, communication, and economic independence. A key focus of this presentation is knowledge, often seen as the guiding principle of hip hop—promoting awareness of history and self-empowerment.

The presentation questions whether elements like knowledge have been lost in mainstream hip hop due to commercialisation, or whether they still exist in underground movements and independent voices. Ultimately, it invites discussion on how hip hop has evolved and whether its original pillars are being preserved or redefined.
