A program celebrating the joy of collaboration and profound artistic journeys: Canadian-Armenian pianist and composer Eve Egoyan performs music by Ann Southam and Linda Catlin Smith. Eve has had the privilege to share deep personal and professional relationships with these two extraordinary composers over many years. Eve will be performing Ann’s In Retrospect which “represents the quiet revisiting of what has gone before” and Linda Catlin Smith’s Tide Pool, “small things in a subtle, gently fluctuating sea of sound”.During the past 15 years, Eve has been exploring how to elegantly expand the expressive possibilities of the acoustic piano using cutting-edge technology. Eve will perform her own composition Ghosts beneath my Fingertips (for Viva) in which she explores the delicacy of Armenian folk tunes (US première) and Surface Tension, a collaborative interdisciplinary work for optical sensor-interfaced acoustic piano and interactive video created by Eve and her husband, media artist David Rokeby. In Surface Tension Eve’s performance is transformed and interpreted by a computer into live visual images projected onto a screen. The visuals respond to a variety of performance parameters including dynamics, pitch, the harmonic relation between pitches, the use of the sustain pedal, and the duration of individual notes. This extends the piano into a visual instrument as well as a musical one. The music is shaped partly by Eve’s response to the system's visual response to her playing. All visual activity on the screen is directly responsive to Eve’s touch. The result is an extraordinary integration of sound and image in which neither of these elements dominate the other.
