About this Event

SYNOPSIS

We are excited to announce that we will launch two new Springer books at this event.

‘Creative Simulations: George Mallen and the Early Computer Arts Society’ Written by Catherine Mason

and

‘The Arts and Computational Culture: Real and Virtual Worlds’ with multiple Chapter Authors and Edited by Tula Giannini and Jonathan P. Bowen.

‘Creative Simulations: George Mallen and the Early Computer Arts Society’

Catherine Mason is pleased to announce that ‘Creative Simulations: George Mallen and the Early Computer Arts Society’ is now available, published by Springer. This book tells the story of the origins and history of the CAS through its activities and exhibitions from 1969 to the early 1970s. It presents new research on ‘Ecogame’, the ground-breaking collaborative CAS project that was led by George Mallen, a pioneer of creative computer systems since 1962 and the CAS’s last surviving founder. ‘Ecogame’, first exhibited 1970, was a simulation model of an economic system, inspired by cybernetics, and was the first multi-player, digitally driven, interactive gaming system in the UK. It exemplified the CAS belief in a positive ‘human/machine interrelationship’ made visible through art – a philosophy that the CAS continues to encourage today.

‘The Arts and Computational Culture: Real and Virtual Worlds’

The EVA Conferences have collaborated with Springer Link Academic Publishers over many years. In 2013, many conference contributors authored chapters for ‘Electronic Visualisation in Arts and Culture’, ISBN 978-1-4471-5405-1, edited by Jonathan P. Bowen, Suzanne Keene and Kia Ng. Jonathan and Tula Giannini were then the authors of ‘Museums and Digital Culture’ for Springer in 2019. In 2023, Jonathan and Tula looked at many recent EVA papers and contributing authors who had considerable expertise in many important but diverse areas of Computational Culture, in the rapidly changing world that we now inhabit. ‘The Arts and Computational Culture: Real and Virtual Worlds’, edited by Tula Giannini and Jonathan P. Bowen., offers a very broad range of research and ideas that are all very relevant to today’s digital artists, creators, curators, archivists, and academics.

DETAILS

The event will feature a talk by Catherine Mason about the work of CAS Founder, George Mallen, (see above) and various Chapter Authors of ‘The Arts and Computational Culture: Real and Virtual Worlds’ will give brief presentations about their particular topic. (‘In Person’ and ‘Online’)

In addition, we will have a very relevant Hybrid presentation from Jonathan P. Bowen at the BCS and Jack Copeland from New Zealand entitled ‘Turing, Warhol, and Monroe: Development of ‘The Turing Guide’ cover’

This will be followed by a drinks reception and an opportunity to meet many of the ‘In Person’ authors and discuss their research and ideas found in these new Springer books.

Book Launch Evening attendees can receive a discounted price on these books.
