The performance of the Eurasian Student Symphony Orchestra of the Kazakh National University of the Arts at Berlin’s Konzerthaus, the second after its successful festival debut in 2016, is notable for two reasons: on the one hand, the orchestra is bringing with it a dombra ensemble – lute sounds that may be unfamiliar to Central European ears, and which the renowned Kazakh composer Nurghissa Tilendiyev combined with a classical orchestra in his work Makambhet. Then of course, the young musicians are eager to prove that they also command the “great” romantic repertoire and are no strangers to Robert Schumann or Antonín Dvořák. Therefore, it will be fascinating to hear how the acclaimed pianist Karina Izmailova interprets Schumann’s wonderful Piano Concerto. And how, after the interval, Dvořák’s Eighth Symphony, a masterwork of beautiful melodies and deeply-felt sounds, will be rendered by the hands and fingers of the Eurasian Student Symphony Orchestra.
