About this Event

Discover the Colne Estuary with Astrex Corp

Step away from the city and immerse yourself in the natural beauty and deep-rooted history of the Essex coastline. Our flagship "Viewside" tour takes you on a 4.4-mile journey through ancient maritime towns and stunning tidal landscapes.

What to Expect

Starting at the vibrant University Quays, we follow the winding River Colne toward the historic town of Wivenhoe. After a brief hospitality break to enjoy the local atmosphere, we head into the wilder reaches of the trail, finishing at the spectacular Alresford Tidal Ford.

Highlights include:

  • Maritime Heritage: Hear stories of the shipyards and smugglers that once defined the Colne.
  • Expert Guidance: Our staff are trained in dynamic risk assessment and hospitality to ensure your comfort.
  • Bespoke Content: Learn about the unique flora and fauna of the salt marshes.

Safety & Preparation

Due to the nature of the Essex coastline, this tour involves uneven terrain and muddy paths.

  • Footwear: Sturdy walking boots are mandatory.
  • Tidal Crossings: We pride ourselves on our operational safety; tours are strictly timed around the Alresford Creek tide markers to ensure safe passage.
  • Fitness: A moderate level of fitness is required for this 4.4-mile trek.

Agenda

πŸ•‘: 09:00 AM - 09:15 AM
Arrival and Welcome

Info: Your morning begins at University Quays. During this 15-minute window, you will meet our professional guiding team for check-in and a vital safety orientation. We will confirm everyone has the mandatory footwear and provide a brief overview of the 8.8-mile route and the specific tidal conditions for the day.

πŸ•‘: 09:15 AM - 11:30 AM
Outbound to Alresford Creek

Info: We depart promptly from the Quays for the first 4.4-mile leg. This stretch takes us through Wivenhoe and out toward the wilder reaches of Alresford Creek. By heading straight to the Tidal Ford first, we capture the best views and tackle the most natural terrain while energy is high. We’ll pause at the Ford for photography and a discussion on the unique estuary ecosystem.

πŸ•‘: 11:30 AM - 12:45 PM
The Return to Wivenhoe

Info: We begin our return journey, heading back toward the historic town of Wivenhoe. This 1.15-hour stretch allows us to enjoy the coastal views from a fresh perspective. Your guides will continue to share insights into the maritime history of the River Colne as we transition from the salt marshes back toward the town's historic waterfront.

πŸ•‘: 12:15 PM - 01:15 PM
The Creek and the Tidal Ford

Info: Following lunch, the tour heads toward the scenic Alresford Creek. This hour-long section focuses on the natural beauty of the salt marshes and the unique geography of the Alresford Tidal Ford. We will pause for photography and a discussion on the local ecosystem before beginning our final return stretch.

πŸ•‘: 12:45 PM - 01:45 PM
The Wivenhoe Hospitality Break

Info: We take our scheduled one-hour lunch break in the heart of Wivenhoe. Placing the break here serves as a perfect reward after completing roughly 6.5 miles of the total journey. You can enjoy a packed lunch by the quay or visit a local independent cafe. We regroup at the waterfront at 1:40 PM for our final short leg.

πŸ•‘: 01:45 PM - 02:30 PM
The Final Stretch to the Quays

Info: Refreshed from lunch, we complete the final 2-mile walk back to University Quays. This is a flatter, easier section of the path, perfect for a steady finish. It’s a great opportunity to ask your guides any final questions or discuss future Essex Viewside adventures.

πŸ•‘: 02:30 PM
Farewell at University Quays

Info: We conclude our 8.8-mile circuit at our original meeting point. Your guides will be available to assist with directions to the Route 51 bus, Hythe Station, or the campus parking zones.
