The History of ASMY West End
Let me share with you a little bit about the history of ASMY West End and how it all began.
ASMY West End has come a long way over the past 27 years. What is now a spacious and beautiful sanctuary actually began in my family’s small lounge room, where we would host free kirtan, meditation, and share simple vegetarian meals. Even in that tiny space, we’d often squeeze in 30 people — sometimes spilling out onto the front steps.
As more people started coming, we moved to a larger house on Montague Road, where our programs grew to include yoga classes and regular community gatherings. From there, we took a big leap into a commercial space on Kurilpa Street. I still remember feeling unsure about how we would manage the rent — but the community showed up, and we continued to grow.
After being displaced by the 2011 floods, we rebuilt once again, creating a beautiful yoga and meditation space from the ground up. And as the community kept expanding, we eventually moved into the centre we now call home.
We are all very happy here and because the space is so large we have plenty of room to continue to grow, but this is it for me, I'm done moving and after 27 years, I'm getting too old for another move lol. But I think you'd agree that this beautiful space is just perfect for our needs.
Looking back, it’s been an incredible journey — from a humble lounge room to a thriving community space. What’s remained constant through it all is the spirit of connection, service, and coming together.
As a non-profit organisation, powered by volunteers, ASMY West End has been offering so many wonderful low cost and free or donation programs and events for the past 27 years. We have given out over 10,000 delicious community meals and we are asking very little in return, we only ask that you take this wonderful gift that we are offering. This gift that will transform your life!
Namaste,
Gayatri
