About this Event

AAAinA is pleased to present a two-part series in May called Entangled Histories.  In Part 2 of this series, independent curator Hammad Nasar will present images and information about the exhibition Beyond the Page, followed by a conversation with curator Brinda Kumar.

Beyond the Page (7 Oct 2023 – 28 January 2024, MK Gallery, Milton Keynes & 17 Feb–2 Jun 2024, The Box, Plymouth) tells the story of contemporary art’s engagement with the historic traditions of South Asian miniature painting through 180 works drawn from important public collections, rarely accessed private collections, and contemporary commissions.

This program will explore how artists in South Asia and beyond (including Howard Hodgkin, whose collection of miniatures is currently on view at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York) continue to find contemporary relevance in the possibilities offered by the miniature tradition. That many of the world’s greatest collections of South Asian miniature paintings and manuscripts are held in Britain also raises questions of culture and power in the entangled histories of Empire and globalization.

Beyond the Page is curated by Hammad Nasar and Anthony Spira with advice from Emily Hannam. Please click this link for more information on the exhibition.

Hammad Nasar is a curator, writer and strategic advisor. He has held research fellowships at Yale University’s Paul Mellon Centre, London (where co-led the ‘London, Asia’ project) and UAL’s Decolonising Arts Institute. Earlier, he was Executive Director of the Stuart Hall Foundation, London; Head of Research & Programmes at Asia Art Archive, Hong Kong; and, co-founded Green Cardamom, London.

Known for collaborative, exhibition-led inquiry, his recent exhibitions include: Beyond the Page: South Asian Miniature Painting and Britain, 1600 to Now (2023-24); Making New Worlds: Li Yuan-chia & Friends (2023-24); Divided Selves: Legacies, Memories, Belonging (2023); British Art Show 9 (2021-22); Turner Prize (2021); Speech Acts: Reflection-Imagination-Repetition (2018-19) and Rock, Paper, Scissors: Positions in Play – the UAE’s National Pavilion at the Venice Biennale (2017).

He is a board member of the Henry Moore Foundation (UK) and Mophradat (Belgium), and was awarded an MBE for services to the arts in 2023.

Brinda Kumar is an Associate Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, where her curatorial projects have included monographic exhibitions on the work of Nasreen Mohamedi, Gerhard Richter, Charles Ray and Philip Guston as well as thematic exhibitions including Like Life: Sculpture, Color, and the Body (2018) and Home Is a Foreign Place: Recent Acquisitions in Context (2019–20). She is part of the curatorial team working toward the Oscar L. Tang and H. M. Agnes Hsu-Tang Wing at The Met. Kumar is the author of several essays for museum catalogues and has published articles from her doctoral research on the history of collecting Indian art in the United States.

Light refreshments will be provided.

AAAinA’s general programming and operations are funded in part by the New York State Council on the Arts, the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in Partnership with the City Council, Ruth Foundation, and the Vilcek Foundation.
