JaZzLine INSTITUTE and California Jazz Conservatory present a free masterclass in ensemble playing with two of the greatest artists of our time. Open to instrumentalists and vocalists of all levels, attendees will receive coaching in improvisation, repertoire, ensemble playing, and performance skills. Often regarded as the Betty Carter of the West Coast, Faye Carol is a renowned vocalist and educator whose band has served as a university for top talent emerging from the Bay Area for over 50 years, including Benny Green, Dayna Stephens, Glen Pearson, Darrell Green, Marcus Shelby, Kito Kamili, and Joe Warner. Her vocal proteges include Ledisi and Kehlani. Marvin ‘Smitty’ Smith is one of the most highly regarded drummers in the world today with a resume that includes Sonny Rollins, Steve Coleman, Benny Golson, Jon Hendricks, and David ‘Fathead’ Newman.Supported in part by a Civic Arts Grant from the City of Berkeley.
The Dynamic Miss Faye Carol
is an iconic figure in the Bay Area and beyond, celebrated for her powerful voice, astonishing versatility, and profound connection with her audience. Masterful across genres including jazz, blues, R&B, gospel, funk, Latin, and hip-hop, she has crafted her own authentic sound and unique delivery, captivating audiences worldwide. Beginning her career in gospel, Miss Faye rose to fame performing with Oakland blues and funk legend Johnny Talbot & De Thangs, before making her mark in San Francisco’s jazz, blues, and cabaret clubs during the 1970s and 80s.
Over her 60-year career, Miss Faye has maintained a high level of musicianship, mentoring some of the Bay Area’s brightest talents, including pianist Benny Green, bassist Marcus Shelby, and her daughter, Kito Kamili. Her vocal protégés include international stars Kehlani and Ledisi. She has shared the stage with legends like Marvin Gaye, Ray Charles, Pharaoh Sanders, and Bobby Hutcherson, among many others.
Miss Faye is also a dedicated educator, founder of the School of the Getdown, and has taught for over three decades in various programs and schools. She has been honored with numerous accolades, including the Bay Area Jazz Journalists Association Jazz Hero Award, the Jefferson Award for Public Service, and a prestigious 2021 Hewlett 50 Arts Commission. Miss Faye’s contributions to music and education have earned her a place in the Oakland Walk of Fame, the Meridian Mississippi Walk of Fame, and the Pittsburg Entertainment and Arts Hall of Fame.
Marvin “Smitty” Smith is a highly respected American jazz drummer and composer, born on June 24, 1961, in Waukegan, Illinois. Exposed to music at an early age, Marvin began formal training at just three years old. A graduate of Berklee College of Music, Smith has recorded over 200 albums with a variety of artists and has released two solo albums. His impressive career includes collaborations with jazz legends such as Sonny Rollins and Dave Holland, as well as pop icon Sting.
Smith also served as the drummer for The Tonight Show with Jay Leno band from 1995 to 2009, under the leadership of Kevin Eubanks. In addition to his extensive studio work, Smith has toured with numerous influential artists across various genres, and his impact on the jazz world continues to be felt through his contributions to live performances worldwide.
