About this Event

We’ll share a meal and talk about everything from rising electricity bills to energy-guzzling data centers to what to do in an emergency when the power goes out.

We all use energy every day, from plugging in a phone to filling up the tank. But we don’t all experience it equally: low income communities and communities of color tend to spend more of their income on powering their homes, forcing some to choose between heat and groceries. They also endure longer power outages after storms. How can community action and energy planning make our grid more affordable and reliable for everyone?

Join us for this open discussion exploring energy use in West Oakland.

  • We’ll explore a new energy resilience project at a Caltrans facility on Burma Road. We’re working with Caltrans to get them an electric street sweeper equipped with bidirectional charging that can power the Caltrans facility during power outages, so they can provide emergency services like clearing roads. We’ll learn about V2B (vehicle to building) technology and brainstorm how different technologies could help our community in a crisis.
  • We’ll learn about the environmental impacts of data centers, a quickly growing sector in California with big implications for our aging energy grid.
  • We’ll share experiences using and paying for energy, and brainstorm solutions on the personal and the policy level.
