Both instant bestsellers in Japan, both Emi Yagi and Satoshi Yagisawa's books have found an avid readership in the UK and quickly rose to the top of the charts. Join us this March for a rare opportunity to meet both authors and for a fascinating discussion on Japanese contemporary fiction, followed by a Q&A and book signing.
Emi Yagi was born in Nagano Prefecture in 1988. She Graduated from Waseda University’s School of Culture, Media and Society. In 2020, her work Kūshin techōwon the 36th Dazai Osamu Prize. While being translated into 25 different languages around the world, the English edition—Diary of a Void (published in August 2022)—has received high praise, including being featured as one of the books of the year by theNew York Timesand New York Public Library. In 2024,Kyūkan-bi no kanojotachi (When the Museum Is Closed) won the 13th Kawai Hayao Storytelling Award.
Yagisawa Satoshi debuted in 2010 with his novel Morisaki Shoten No Hibi which was adapted into a movie in 2011 and followed up with a sequel publication, Zoku Morisaki Shoten No Hibi. His Morisaki Shoten series has received offers to be translated into over 50 languages worldwide and has garnered high acclaim overseas. In 2024, Days at the Morisaki Bookshop—the English edition of Morisaki Shoten no hibi translated by Eric Ozawa—was shortlisted in the Debut Fiction category of the British Book Awards, a literary award bestowed to exceptional writers and their works. His other works include the Junkissa Torunka (Days at the Torunka Café) series, Kimi To Kuraseba (If I Live with You), and more. His hobbies include playing the guitar, and he loves coffee and cats.
This event will be chaired by Dr Victoria Young, Associate Professor in Japanese Literature andthe Faculty of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies, University of Cambridge, specialising in Modern and contemporary Japanese literature, postcolonial studies, feminist criticism, and more.
