Workshop: Emerging Voices – Making & Mending the Manchester Art Scene

Join us for an interactive and fully-funded workshop where we explore, create, and imagine the future of the Manchester contemporary art scene. This is a space for emerging and established artists, students, graduates, and creatives to come together to share ideas, express themselves, and co-create solutions for a more connected and accessible art community.
What to expect:
- Collaborative activities using a big roll of paper, pens, pencils to doodle, sketch, write, and build.
- Discussions on the current Manchester art scene and ways we can bridge gaps between art schools, artists, galleries, studios, and the wider community.
- Opportunities to express your wishes, ideas, and visions for the city’s creative spaces.
- Exploration of how we can make the art scene more welcoming, inclusive, and successful.
- Co-learning and co-creation exercises to discover what the community needs and wants.
- Free refreshments
Together, we’ll ask:
- How can we mend the art scene in Manchester?
- What can we make to bridge the gap between emerging artists and the wider art world?
- How can we create an inspiring and welcoming space where artists can thrive?
This workshop is about making and mending our community through creativity, dialogue, and shared experiences. Bring your ideas, your imagination, and your hands-on creativity.

About 1838 Collective
Named after the founding year of Manchester School of Art, we are an artist-led initiative that supports students and graduates as they transition from art school to the professional art world. Through free and affordable opportunities - including exhibitions, co-working sessions, workshops, and social events - we provide a supportive framework that enables emerging artists to develop confidence, expand their networks, and continue their creative practice beyond university.
This fully-funded event is part of our programme 'Making and Mending' at Altogether Otherwise. This event is free, thanks to our funder, RISE at Manchester Metropolitan University.
Making and Mending is a fine art exhibition showcasing the work of students and recent graduates from Manchester School of Art. Our exhibition and series of events aim to inspire and empower emerging artists, building a supportive community of artists and contributing to a thriving contemporary art scene in Manchester.
