Embroidery Extravaganza Workshop Series

This workshop series that highlights various embroidery techniques from around the world. We aim to share foundational sewing knowledge as a means of hands-on learning.

SCRAP will be partnering with our neighbors at Bayview's Cafe Alma to host this new and exciting series.

Workshop Location: Cafe Alma: 888 Ines Ave, SF, CA- 94124

Workshop Description

Let’s explore the chain stitch, a durable and vibrant stitch used across the Andes, the Amazon, and Mesoamerica. This technique is especially prominent among the Uros people, who have used it since pre-colonial times. Their artistry is known for its strong, colorful, and vibrant chain stitch on raw cotton.

Descendants of the Incas, the Uros are a mysterious people who have successfully maintained their distinct culture against numerous colonization attempts, strategically living on floating islands. They utilize the chain stitch to vividly represent the animals, people, and colors of their surrounding world.

The chain stitch itself is highly durable, difficult to remove, and does not require finishing. Although we still use this stitch for lettering and decorating our clothing, most of it is now done by machine.

Participants are welcome to bring something to personalize, like a jacket, sweater, or tote bag. But we will have plenty of materials for you to practice on.
