Rooted in club culture and blurring the line between a gig and a club night, SIGNS is a party series with a wide and diverse music program spanning jazz, soul, funk, trad, world/global, hip hop, disco, and house music, alongside more left-field sounds and beyond.
ELIKYA (LIVE, MAIN STAGE)
Based in Ireland, Elikya, over the last twenty years have acted as Congolese Music’s Ambassadors to the nation. This 9 piece rumba / dance / bass heavy outfit brings together all the elements of Congolese music. Entrancing guitar melodies, hip-commanding basslines and melodic, relentless percussion topped off with the melodic sweetness that singing in Congo’s main language “Lingala” brings. With a penchant for precision, performance and theatrics, Elikya take the over 70 years of modern Congolese music history and its incredibly unique take on what makes a spectacle (think full band choreography/a highly stylized wardrobe and the musical expertise of classic big band orchestras) and combine it with hypnotizing low end magic. Elikya have earned their place for 20 years as flag bearers of modern Congolese Rumba and Ndombolo, leaving people in a frenzy up and down the country.
DAVID DEBARRA (LIVE, MAIN STAGE)
David deBarra is a singer-songwriter from Dublin with an experimental approach to pop and rock music and a background in arrangement and composition for voice. He has just released his second album 'Rest in Peace, Brian Wilson' which is available for free on Bandcamp and streaming platforms. The music is energetic and direct, embodying the ethos of the best of 90s rock, while also giving a nod to 60s and 70s classics, recalling at different times the likes of Weezer, Judee Sill, The Beach Boys, Green Day, Bob Dylan, Neutral Milk Hotel, The Four Seasons and Elton John. But these comparisons don't quite capture the essence of the music, with David's idiosyncratic compositions brimming with melodic colour and harmonic depth, his deeply personal and disarming lyrics, and the alternatively maximalist and minimalist productions pushing his sound into new territories. David deBarra’s music remains a reminder that everything will be alright in the end.
FARAH ELLE (LIVE, MAIN STAGE)
Across Farah Elle’s childhood, music was a sanctuary. It gave her a vocabulary to process various life happenings from the impact of her incredible family history in Libya to universal experiences intrinsic with becoming a fearless young woman in modern society. Everything that shaped who Farah is as a person today is masterfully reflected in her artistry and documented on FATIMA, her long-awaited debut record out now. On FATIMA, Farah Elle’s powerful cadence is a commanding force amongst the instantly captivating cinematic soundscapes. She makes timeless music with a modern edge, reminiscent of Tori Amos, Kate Bush, Kimbra and Aṣa. On Fatima, named after her mother, Farah explores themes of displacement, identity and culture as well as celebrating nature, love and friendship on an album that Farah describes as a “coming of age record,” one across which she hears herself “unfolding in the songs.” Farah’s devotion to music developed at an early age. Watching her older siblings playing together, she was inspired to pick up a guitar and experiment unselfconsciously. Soon after, she penned poetry, singing her words to a piano accompaniment. These moments of self-taught musical expression were hugely cathartic for her. Sitting at the piano gave Farah a space to examine pivotal moments in her life with an unfiltered defiance across her delivery: “I do this to remove it from my bones,” she sings on ‘Play It By Ear.’ She makes timeless music with a modern edge, reminiscent of Tori Amos, Kate Bush, Kimbra and Aṣa.
CORMORANT TREE OH (LIVE, MAIN STAGE)
Heyyy. Mary here, alias Cormorant Tree Oh, and I am a multi-disciplinary artist and musician from Dublin, Ireland. I take inspiration from folk, psychedelia, horror soundtracks and nature field recordings, though I would say experimenting with instruments I don't really know how to play is what shapes my sound the most. For years I had resigned myself to never performing live and I shyed away from working with other musicians. This self imposed isolation also shaped how I approached music making. In recent times I have begun to get over my stagefright, with a milestone gig supporting Lankum in Vicar Street proving a real turning point. I have three albums under my belt so far. My first self titled album came out in 2018 followed by Swoontide in 2022, which was released through Trapped Animal Records. My third album Moonish was released in Autumn 2024. The Thin Air described me as 'one of the country's most compelling experimental solo artists' which is pretty cool.
