About this Event

Curated by Carolina Rivera Escamilla, this panel brings together writers honoring the dignity for past and present human rights violations. "The weight of the words we carry" refers to the responsibility that accompanies the transmission of the principles of dignity acquired through community life, a responsibility bequeathed by those who have already died. The dead have not disappeared; rather, they have been imbued with eternal life through their preservation in our collective narratives. The present moment offers a glimpse of a future that was envisioned by the subjects of this study and for which they were willing to sacrifice their lives in order to avoid the current reality. Featuring: Juana M. Ramos, Adriana Briff, Carolina Rivera Escamilla, Susana Marcelo, Margarita Drago, and Alicia Partnoy.

Organizado por Carolina Rivera Escamilla, esta conversación une a escritoras honrando la dignidad de las victimas pasadas y presentes de violaciones de los derechos humanos. «El peso de las palabras que llevamos», se alude a la responsabilidad que conlleva la transmisión de los principios de dignidad adquiridos a través de la vida en comunidad, legados por aquellos que ya han transcendido. Los muertos no se han desvanecido, sino que han quedado inmortalizados en nuestras narrativas. Margarita Drago (Rosario, Argentina). Doctora, catedrática de Lengua y Literatura Hispanoamericana en la Universidad de la Ciudad de Nueva York, poeta y narradora. Es autora de Fragmentos de la memoria: Recuerdos de una experiencia carcelaria (1975-1980), declarado en 2016 de interés cultural por la Honorable Cámara de Diputados de la Nación Argentina; de la edición ampliada del mismo, Fragmentos de la memoria. Mi vida en dos batallas (2022); de los poemarios: Con la memoria al ras de la garganta; Quedó la puerta abierta; Hijas de los vuelos; Un gato de ojos grandes me mira fijamente; Heme aquí; Con la memoria stretta in gola; Sé vuelo; Un cuerpo que aún palpita; Palabra ardiente; del estudio académico: Sor María de Jesús Tomelín (1579-1637, concepcionista poblana: La construcción fallida de una santa. Es coautora de Tomamos la palabra: mujeres en la guerra civil de El Salvador (1980-1992). Es subdirectora de la revista semestral de literatura EntreTmas Revista Digital y curadora, junto a Juana M. Ramos, de la serie Palabra-Imagen-Escena.

Margarita Drago (Rosario, Argentina). PhD and professor of Hispanic American Language and Literature at the City University of New York; poet and prose writer. She is the author of Fragmentos de la memoria. Recuerdos de una experiencia carcelaria (1975–1980), declared in 2016 to be of cultural interest by the Honorable Chamber of Deputies of the Argentine Nation; the expanded edition Fragmentos de la memoria. Mi vida en dos batallas (2022); and the poetry collections Con la memoria al ras de la garganta; Quedó la puerta abierta; Hijas de los vuelos; Un gato de ojos grandes me mira fijamente; Heme aquí; Con la memoria stretta in gola; Sé vuelo; Un cuerpo que aún palpita; and Palabra ardiente. She is the author of the academic study Sor María de Jesús Tomelín (1579–1637), Conceptionist from Puebla d Los Ángeles: The Fallen Construction of a Saint, and coauthor of Tomamos la palabra: mujeres en la guerra civil de El Salvador (1980–1992). She is deputy editor of EntreTmas Revista Digital and, together with Juana M. Ramos, curator of the Palabra–Imagen–Escena series.

Alicia Partnoy: Poeta, memorialista, académica y activista por los derechos humanos, Alicia Partnoy es autora, traductora o editora de once libros y un poemario. Es más conocida por “La Escuelita”: relatos de desaparición y supervivencia, que se utilizó como prueba en los juicios contra los autores del genocidio que aterrorizó a Argentina en los años 70. Este relato literario de su experiencia como desaparecida en su país natal se publicó en español, inglés, francés y bengalí. Su adaptación teatral se estrenó en Nepal a cargo de One World Theatre, con Partnoy como intérprete. Antigua coeditora de Chicana Latina Studies: The Journal of Mujeres Activas en Letras y Cambio Social, la Dra. Partnoy ha sido seleccionada dos veces por la Pushcart Foundation Writer's Choice Selection (Tobias Wolff y Bobbie Ann Mason) y ha aparecido en la lista de best-sellers del London Times. Sus poemas, textos testimoniales y trabajos académicos se han publicado ampliamente en Estados Unidos y en el extranjero. Alicia Partnoy: Poet, memoirist, scholar, and human rights activist Alicia Partnoy is the author, translator or editor of eleven books and a poetry chapbook. She is better known for The Little School: Tales of Disappearance and Survival, which was evidence in the trials against the genocide perpetrators that terrorized Argentina in the 70’s. This literary account of her experience as a disappeared in her homeland was published in Spanish, English, French, and Bengali. Its theatre adaptation debuted in Nepal by One World Theatre, with Partnoy as a performer. Former co-editor of Chicana Latina Studies: The Journal of Mujeres Activas en Letras y Cambio Social, Dr. Partnoy has been twice a Pushcart Foundation Writer’s Choice Selection (Tobias Wolff and Bobbie Ann Mason) and has been listed in the London Times as a best-seller. Her poems, testimonial texts, and scholarship have been widely published in the U.S.A and abroad. Her poetry collection, Flowering Fires/Fuegos florales, translated by Gail Wronsky, received the First Settlement House American Poetry Prize. Poems from her Revenge of the Apple/Venganza de la manzana rode the Metro in New York, Dallas and Washington D.C, and were musicalized by Sweet Honey in the Rock. Juana M. Ramos (Santa Ana, El Salvador). Profesora de español y literatura en York College, Universidad Pública de la Ciudad de Nueva York. Ha participado en conferencias, coloquios y festivales de poesía en Latinoamérica, España, Rumanía e Inglaterra. Su obra incluye seis poemarios, un libro de relatos, ensayo y memorias. Sus poemas y relatos han aparecido publicados en numerosas antologías y revistas literarias en Latinoamérica, EE. UU. y España, y han sido traducidos al inglés, portugués, francés, griego e italiano. En 2021 recibió el premio Feliks Gross Award, otorgado por la Universidad Pública de la Ciudad de Nueva York. Asimismo, fue reconocida por Fundación Chifurnia como Poeta del Año 2023 en El Salvador, y en 2024 fue la poeta homenajeada en la 18ª Feria del Libro Hispana/Latina en NY, organizada por The Hispanic/Latino Cultural Center of NY. Asimismo, es directora de la revista semestral de literatura EntreTmas Revista Digital y coproductora y curadora de la serie Palabra-Imagen-Escena que promueve la literatura producida en español en NY.

Juana M. Ramos (Santa Ana, El Salvador) is a professor of Spanish and literature at York College, City University of New York. She has participated in conferences, colloquia, and poetry festivals in Latin America, Spain, Rumania, and England. Her work includes six poetry collections, a book of short stories, essays, and memoirs. Her poems and stories have been published in numerous anthologies and literary magazines and have been translated into English, Portuguese, French, Greek, and Italian. In 2021, she received the Feliks Gross Award from City University of New York. Additionally, she was recognized by the Chifurnia Foundation as Poet of the Year 2023 in El Salvador, and in 2024, she was the honored poet at the 18th Hispanic/Latino Book Fair in NY, organized by The Hispanic/Latino Cultural Center of NY. She is also the director of the biannual literary magazine EntreTmas Revista Digital and co-producer and curator of the series Palabra-Imagen-Escena, which promotes literature produced in Spanish in NY.

Adriana Briff (Rosario, Argentina, 1963). Escritora, editora y acompañante terapéutica. Participó en Don't cry for me America, antología de escritores argentinos en Estados Unidos, editada por Ars Communis (2020). En 2020 publicó en Revista Barullo de Rosario y varias contratapas en el diario Página 12 de la misma ciudad. En 2023 formó parte de la antología Latinos contra el Odio, editado por HispanicLA.com.Actualmente realiza trabajos de edición y coordina el segmento cultural del Fogón Virtual de Hispanicla en Los Ángeles. En 2025 publicó su libro Crónicas de los desayunos editado por Poetry Ambassador Press.

Carolina Rivera Escamilla es educadora, escritora, poeta, actor, documentalista, activista cultural y organizadora de eventos literarios comunitarios. Nacida en El Salvador, obtuvo una licenciatura en Literatura Inglesa por la Universidad de California, Los Ángeles, y cursos de estudió Literatura Española y Cine en UCLA Extensión. Ha sido becaria del programa Emerging Voices de PEN America. Su primera colección de relatos cortos, ...after..., fue publicada en 2015 por World Stage Press. Su primera colección de poesía teatral, «In a Corner of Your Country», fue publicada en 2023 por Bellucci, Palms & Carmichael, LLC Press. La edición en español, titulada «En una Esquina de tu País», fue publicada en marzo de 2024 por Poetry Ambassador Press. Dirigió, escribió y produjo el documental «Manlio Argueta, Poets and Volcanoes». Susana Marcelo (ella) es profesora y escritora. Nació en El Salvador y se crió en Los Ángeles, California. Entre sus pasiones se encuentran la diáspora latine y centroamericana y la literatura. Su trabajo ha sido publicado en Virginia Quarterly Review, The Wandering Song: Central American Writing in the United States (Tia Chucha press), la antología costarricense Escaleras Abajo (Perro Azul press) y otras publicaciones.

Susana Marcelo (she/her/ella) is a professor and writer. She was born in El Salvador and raised in Los Angeles. Her passions include the Central American/Latine diaspora and literature. Her work has been published in Virginia Quarterly Review, The Wandering Song: Central American Writing in the United States (Tia Chucha press), the Costa Rican anthology Escaleras Abajo (Perro Azul press), and others.

About Beyond Baroque

is one of the United States' leading independent Literary | Arts Centers and public spaces dedicated to expanding the public's knowledge of poetry, literature and art through cultural events and community interaction. Founded in 1968 as an experimental literary magazine, Beyond Baroque is based out of the original City Hall building in Venice, California. The Center offers a diverse variety of literary and arts programming including readings and workshops. The building also houses a bookstore with a large collection of new poetry books for sale.

Livestream: If you can’t join us in person the event will be livestreamed on at the scheduled time of the event. If you are tuning in this way, no ticket purchase is necessary.

If you are attending in person, ticket purchase is required. Tickets will be available at the Beyond Baroque bookstore on the day of the event, but we recommend registering in advance through Eventbrite. Masks are encouraged while inside our center. Please arrive early.
