Kirtan is a call and response musical meditation from the yoga tradition, considered the most potent form of meditation in this day and age. Singing and dancing to these powerful transcendental sound vibrations cleanses the heart and mind and brings peace to the soul. By engaging our body, mind and heart in this purifying meditation, we can come fully into the present moment and discover the love and joy that is our eternal nature.Kirtan is an active, social form of meditation that you can do with friends. It is meant to be adapted to its time and place, so we’ve taken ancient mantras and set them to upbeat dance music. I invite you to come prepared to sing loud and dance hard – we’ll also have space to lie down and breathe or cozy up on a couch or in a pillow pile.
We’ll share food at the start of the program. At 7pm, we’ll open our meditation with a guided breathing practice and a resonant mantra circle that takes you deep into a meditative space. Then, sing along with ancient mantras in a call and response format and move to these healing, hypnotic vibrations
Beginners highly encouraged, all ages, voices and experiences welcome!
Address: Bridge Space, 133 SE Madison Street, Portland, OR 97214 United States.
How to find us: Look out for an A-frame on the street pointing you towards the door - the entrance isn’t obvious from the street but we’ll have someone standing outside to greet you.
Parking: There is plenty of free street parking in the area.
Accessibility: Thanks to an amazing volunteer crew from Fernhill Ecstatic Dance, the venue now has an ADA accessible ramp entrance! We will have floor pillows and some seating. If you aren’t comfortable sitting on the floor, please come on the earlier side to reserve a chair (you’re welcome to come as early as 6pm)
Food: We serve out dinner between 6:15-7pm. If you’d like a plate, please arrive in time to be done eating by 7pm. All our food is made and offered with love by our volunteer community. We serve dinner because we want people to be able to come right after work, because it’s a wonderful way to build community and because in the kirtan tradition sharing food that’s been offered with love (called prasadam) is a purifying, meditative activity. We cook plant-based, strictly vegetarian and usually vegan. We will always have vegan options.
How to support: A $10-30 sliding scale suggested donation helps us cover the costs of the venue and food, as well as other ongoing costs, and is always deeply appreciated. Our community is rapidly growing and we’re moving into bigger spaces. In the transition, we’re asking people to donate upfront so we know we can cover the venue costs. If you’d like to pitch in with cooking, setup or any other aspect of the events, come find one of the organizers at the event and we’ll add you to our WhatsApp community!
