DYKON= Dyke Icon

The word dyke has a complex history. Once used as a slur against lesbians, it has been reclaimed by many as a political and chosen identity across queer communities. Today, people who identify with the term include lesbians, trans dykes, nonbinary people, masc and femme identities, and others who feel connected to the word’s history and cultural significance.

As we develop the Dyke HERstory Dance Tour, Sarah Bush Dance Project is committed to engaging this history with care, curiosity, and openness. We recognize that the word carries different meanings and experiences for different people.

DYKON Story Hour is intended as an inclusive, intergenerational space for listening, storytelling, and dialogue. Our goal is to honor the many people and communities who have shaped dyke culture and queer history in the Bay Area, while making room for conversation about how language, identity, and community continue to evolve.

Dr. Bonnie Morris

A nationally recognized authority on both women’s sports history and lesbian culture, Dr. Bonnie Morris is the author of nineteen books, including Women’s History for Beginners, Revenge of the Women’s Studies Professor, The Feminist Revolution, Sappho’s Bar and Grill, The Disappearing L, and the recent sports volume What’s the Score? In addition to teaching in the history department at UC Berkeley, Dr. Morris is the archivist for Olivia Records and a regularly featured speaker for Olivia Travel. She organized the first women’s music exhibit at the Library of Congress; introduced the new LGBT History course at Berkeley; and serves as a scholarly adviser to the National Women’s History Museum. She worked with the Museum and the U.S. Mint to select women for the U.S. women on quarters project, resulting in lesbians in our pocket change since 2022. Find her lectures on C-Span!

Helen Carroll

Helen Carroll joined NCLR in August 2001 to lead the Sports Project. She is a nationally acclaimed basketball coach from UNC-Asheville and served as Athletic Director at Mills College. She now devotes her efforts to combating homophobia, biphobia, and transphobia in sports.

Carroll played an instrumental role in NCLR’s sports law work, most notably in the representation of Penn State’s Jennifer Harris against coach Rene Portland. She also collaborated with the NCAA and Dr. Pat Griffin to develop policies for transgender student-athlete inclusion.

Carroll works closely with major sports organizations including the Women’s Sports Foundation and NCAA. As a founder of the NCAA Common Ground Initiative in 2014, she continues to promote LGBTQ inclusion at religious colleges, fostering safer environments for all student athletes.
