Dr Sparky Booker will talk about the Irish population of the city in the later middle ages. Dublin was a colonial capital and seat of the colonial administration, right at the centre of the Pale, but it was also home to a great many Irish men and women, living and working alongside their English neighbours.
Dr Booker and Near FM presenter, Ciarán Murray will discuss how those Irish people (a growing population in the later middle ages) navigated discriminatory laws against them and were able to play a major role in the city's society and economy. Sharing a few compelling examples, Dr Booker will show how the population did this in part by acclimating culturally, taking English names and clothing, but also by marrying into English families and purchasing grants of English law which allowed them to go to the colony's courts.
Sparky Booker is a historian of law, culture, women and society in late medieval Ireland and Assistant Professor in Medieval Irish History at TCD. Sparky has published on many aspects of late medieval Irish history and is the author of Cultural Exchange and Identity in Late Medieval Ireland: the English and Irish of the Four obedient shires (2018), published by Cambridge University Press in their ‘Studies in Medieval Life and Thought’ series. She has served as co-editor of the Irish Studies journal Studia Hibernica and editor of Tales of Medieval Dublin (2014).
