On Wednesday 10 June, Dub Me Always is pleased to present DJ Flip of the legendary Fatman Sound System, playing original vinyl style, alongside the night’s regular host, DJ David Katz. Fatman Sound System was founded in north London in 1967 by Ken ‘Fatman’ Gordon and during the 1970s and 80s it was one of the most highly-rated sounds in the UK, known for its authentic sound and powerful bass response, as well as the team of esteemed mic men and an endless trove of exclusive dub plates obtained from the top producers in Jamaica. Fatman was named best sound system at the Black Echoes British Reggae Awards in 1979 and trounced many a sound during their long reign, in part because of close relations with dub pioneers such as King Tubby, Prince Jammy, Bunny Lee and Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry, among many others.
Fatman’s son Flip has been part of the sound his entire life and in 2005 he took over the management on the sound alongside MC Junior Dan and General. After Fatman passed away in 2024, Flip has continued the legacy through his own pedigree approach to selecting, keeping the vintage reggae sound system tradition alive.
What will Flip pull out of the bag on the night? There’s only one way to find out… this one is bound to be a roadblock, so come early to avoid disappointment, and stay late!
